Breakfast Burritos in Moorpark: CJ's Morning Lineup

A good breakfast burrito solves a real problem. You are up, you are already a little behind, and you need something you can hold in one hand that will actually hold you until lunch. The breakfast burrito Moorpark mornings call for is not complicated food, but it does have to be built right. At CJ's Urban Cafe we make five of them, and each one is a different answer to the same question.

Here is the whole lineup, what is in each, and how to figure out which one is yours.

Five burritos, five personalities. Read through and you will probably know which one is your morning by the second or third.

Ranchero

Jasmine rice, scrambled eggs, pepper jack, cheddar, green peppers, tomatoes, and salsa. This is the one with the most going on. You get two cheeses, you get vegetables, and you get salsa tying it all together. If you like your morning food to have some flavor and a little life to it, start here.

Swiss Scramble

A honey-wheat tortilla with rice, eggs, ham, bacon, and Swiss. This is the hearty one. Ham and bacon together is not a subtle move, and the Swiss adds a mellow, nutty layer that keeps it from being all salt. Order this when you have a physical day ahead of you, or when breakfast is going to be your only meal for a while.

Cheese Scramble

Honey-wheat tortilla, rice, eggs, mozzarella, pepper jack, and cheddar. Three cheeses, no meat. This is the comfort pick, and it is also the one that works for people who want a meatless breakfast without going full vegetable. The pepper jack keeps it from being one-note.

Vegetarian

A spinach tortilla with rice, eggs, spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, and sun-dried tomato pesto. The pesto is what makes this one, honestly. Vegetarian breakfast burritos can taste like an afterthought, and this one does not, because the sun-dried tomato pesto brings a deep savory flavor that the mushrooms and spinach build on. Even people who eat meat order it.

Ham or Bacon

A jalapeno-cheddar tortilla with scrambled eggs, your choice of ham or bacon, tomatoes, and provolone. This is the straightforward one, but the tortilla makes it interesting. Jalapeno and cheddar baked right into the wrap means every bite has a little background heat, and you get to pick your protein.

The tortillas are doing more than holding it together

Notice how many different tortillas are in that list. Honey-wheat on two of them, spinach on the vegetarian, jalapeno-cheddar on the ham or bacon. That is not decoration.

A tortilla is the largest single ingredient in a burrito by surface area, so whatever it tastes like, you taste it in every bite. Honey-wheat brings a faint sweetness that plays well against salty ham and bacon. Spinach keeps the vegetarian tasting green and fresh from the outside in. Jalapeno-cheddar puts heat and sharpness into the wrapper itself so the filling does not have to carry it alone.

If you are deciding between two burritos and cannot break the tie, decide on the tortilla. It is a better tiebreaker than most people expect.

Breakfast burritos are not only a morning food

We are open Monday through Sunday from 8AM to 7:30PM, and the burritos do not disappear at ten. That is a bigger deal than it sounds.

If you worked a night shift and your morning starts at three in the afternoon, you can still have breakfast. If your kid finished practice and wants eggs instead of a sandwich, that is available. If you simply want a burrito for dinner because that is the kind of day it has been, nobody here is going to argue with you.

Breakfast food eaten at the wrong hour is one of the small pleasures of adult life, and we keep it on the board all day for exactly that reason.

How to pick yours

Simple way to sort it. If you want the most flavor, go Ranchero. If you want the most food, go Swiss Scramble. If you want comfort with no meat, go Cheese Scramble. If you want something that eats lighter but still tastes like a real meal, go Vegetarian. And if you know exactly what you want and it is eggs, meat, and cheese with no surprises, go Ham or Bacon.

If you are ordering for a household with different opinions, the Ranchero and the Cheese Scramble tend to cover the widest range of people. Add a Vegetarian if anyone in the group is skipping meat.

And if the morning is already tight, call ahead. Ordering by phone before you leave the house turns a stop into a grab, which is usually the difference between eating breakfast and telling yourself you will eat later.
