Latte vs Mocha vs Cappuccino: CJ's Espresso Guide

If you've ever stood at the counter with espresso drinks explained to you a dozen times and still weren't quite sure what you were ordering, you're not alone. Latte, mocha, cappuccino, americano — they all start from the same shot of espresso, but the differences are real, and once you know them, ordering gets a lot easier.

At CJ's Urban Cafe in Moorpark, we make all of these, and every one of them can be poured over ice when the Ventura County afternoon heats up. Here's a plain-English guide so you can walk in knowing exactly what you want.

It All Starts With Espresso

Espresso is concentrated coffee, pulled as a small, strong shot. On its own it's bold and a little intense. Everything else on this list is espresso plus something — steamed milk, foam, chocolate, or hot water. Understanding that one idea makes the whole menu click into place.

The Four Drinks, Side by Side

Americano

An Americano is espresso plus hot water. It's the closest thing to a regular black coffee but with that espresso backbone. If you like your coffee straightforward and not milky, this is your drink. Over ice, it's clean and refreshing.

Cappuccino

A Cappuccino is espresso with steamed milk and a thick layer of foam on top. It's lighter and airier than a latte, with a stronger coffee-to-milk ratio. If you want to actually taste the espresso but still enjoy some creaminess, the cappuccino is your friend.

Latte

A Latte is espresso with more steamed milk and just a thin cap of foam. It's the smoothest, mildest, milkiest of the bunch — easygoing and comforting. This is the one to order when you want coffee that drinks soft and creamy.

Mocha

A Mocha is essentially a latte with chocolate added. Espresso, steamed milk, and chocolate come together into something that leans a little dessert-like. If you've got a sweet tooth in the morning, the mocha scratches it.

Quick Cheat Sheet

Hot or Iced, Your Call

Every one of these is available iced at CJ's, which matters a lot when you're in Moorpark, Simi Valley, or Camarillo in the middle of summer. An iced latte or iced mocha on the patio is one of the small, genuinely good parts of a warm day. Prefer to skip the espresso entirely? We've also got iced tea, lemonade, and fruit and yogurt smoothies.

How to Order Like a Regular

Now that the espresso drinks are explained, ordering is simple: decide how strong you want the coffee to come through, how much milk you like, and whether you want chocolate. Coffee-forward and foamy? Cappuccino. Smooth and milky? Latte. Sweet? Mocha. Bold and simple? Americano. Then just tell us hot or iced.

Come find your regular order at CJ's Urban Cafe, right on New Los Angeles Ave with outdoor patio seating, open every day from 8AM to 7:30PM. Whether you're a longtime Moorpark local or driving through from the Conejo Valley, we'll pour you something good.
